The Myth of Summers Off

For those of you in the general public who believe that teachers "get three months off every summer!" I have this to say to you.

PHOOEY!

I have had, counting Memorial Day, three days "off" this summer (I'm not counting weekends).  Tomorrow starts week two of the two week intensive STEM training at the local University.  Now mind you, it's been worth it, but gosh, I haven't been able to catch up on my sleep yet.  I usually end up sleeping about the first week trying to catch up from all the sleep deprivation I've suffered over the past year.

I am tired.

Still.

Yeah it is super annoying! I have THIRTEEN days of training this summer. That does not count two days of being on a grading practices committee that has two days of meetings that overlaps other training of mine. It is crazy.

A non-teacher friend on Facebook commented to me that she wished summers were "down time" for her. I had to gently explain that for 10 months of the year I work 12 hours a day, plus time on weekends. During the 10 weeks of the year that we are (ahem) "off" there is precious little time that is truly "down time." This summer I am committed to 4 weeks of classes/professional development, not to mention the planning, team meetings, room set-up, etc. that is done on MY time WITHOUT compensation.

We've been out of school for 7 days (excluding weekends). I've already been in classes for 5 of those days. Yep, tired... still.
