This comment really applises to the "more stupid parent tricks" post. I couldn't figure out how to comment on it though. This is disconcerting that parents think more of themselves, their habits and hang ups more than their children. This happens everyday in my school district. I recall working with a family in which the mom needed help getting the kids Christmas presents but couldn't live without her next hit or cigs. Another problem we face in the district, is that we don't expect the kids to buy the workbooks or supplies needed for class, which may cost all of $5, but everyday after school we catch a large group of these kids at the "candy lady's" buying junkfood.

In high school this problem is not so bad, b/c most of the kids who need money go and get jobs, but the downside is they don't have time to get homework done or can't stay awake in class.

In looking at what I've just written, I'm not criticizing these students and parents, but I hate the way poverty plays out in this country. Folks that are poverty striken are driven by consumables--things that will satisfy them for a moment. I wish someone could fix THAT problem. If you ask me, Poverty is the real problem that needs to be solved.

Like you, I am counting. Including today, we have 23 instructional days to go. Ahhh...
